9/11 was a convenient excuse to do what the Right-wing had wanted all along. They are worried that Iran will get atomic bombs, then Turkey would have to get them, then Iraq and Saudia Arabia. It is all about nuclear proliferation.
But it had to be called "the war against terror" because the logical way to stop all that proliferation of nuclear bombs would be to simply go to the UN and pass a resolution ordering Israel to stop nuclear arms building and require inspections. Then, the rest of Islam would relax and willingly cooperate with the rest of the world. To them, now, we back Israel and no one protects them. At any time, as we all know, Israel could launch war on Iran and we would then start bombing her also. But of course, we will never even discuss Israel's nuclear bombs!
