The sun does, indeed, have an effect. The global climate has been subject to change long before we had the ability to measure it.....and long before we had the ability to affect if....if, indeed, we can to a significant degree. There is still much debate on the subject.
If you're asking be if we have the ability to affect the climate, my answer would have to be yes, we can. Are we the cause of the current warming trend (if, indeed, it is a trend that isn't already reversing itself)? It is possible that we are, in part, responsible....and it is also possible that we aren't to any significant degree. Back in the 70's scientists thought that all the particulate matter we were putting into the atmosphere could block the sun's rays, producing an ice age (and theoretically, it could have happened). More recently, the green house effect describes a scenario in which the particulate matter (chiefly CO2) could trap heat in the atmosphere...causing a warming trend (and it should be recognized that man is not the sole cause of CO2 emissions). I've heard scientists debate that the two opposing trends have reached some sort of funky equilibrium.....another possibility that exists. My thoughts on the subject? I think we would be naive to believe we are the sole cause....or even the main cause...of global warming....if, indeed, this is a long-term trend. Likewise, though, we would be naive to believe that we can have no significant effect on the climate. I see no harm in erring on the side of caution and doing what we can to reduce emission. All we lose (if we are wrong) is smoggy air. New industry can be built around green energy....a good thing, if you ask me. But if you are asking me for a more definitive answer, I can give you none. Atmospheric science is still in its infancy, and global climate change usually occurs over centuries....not years.....so whether or not this is a real, long-term change won't likely be determined until long after we're all gone. Personally, I have no problem with cleaner air though.
