Perhaps Friedman has shares in the Tuna fishery. The one thing that has become quite clear about the right, is that they abhor a savings account and will do what ever is necessary to eliminate it. A big part of the current difficulty has arisen because many believed Bush &co when they were encouraged to spend beyond their means...Unfortunately the credit card bills have come due.j That alone will put a damper on consumption, for quite a while. I don't think that it will be a bad thing for the middle class. If we had kept the surplus, then the government would have the money to spend on such trivialities as bridges and railroads, and seaports,,, the very things that will be needed to support the next boom.
