This is why I love Shuler, he doesn't vote strictly along party lines
and he's a moderate Democrat (like me!). I have agreed with pretty
much every vote he has cast so far.

Shuler votes against auto bailout

Rep. Heath Shuler voted against the $14 billion rescue package late
Wednesday for two of Detroit's automakers because he said the federal
loans would only delay their inevitable restructurings.

The House passed the bill 237-170 with largely Democrat support. The
measure would create an industry overseer, dubbed car czar, who would
lend the money to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC. It also would
require the companies to make operational changes to improve the
bottom line.
Democrats say the carmakers must be given aid while they develop
restructuring plans or more jobs will be threatened in the current
recession. Shuler of Waynesville was one of only 20 Democrats in the
House to vote against it.
"There is no question that the U.S. automotive industry is an
essential part of our nation’s economy," Shuler said in a statement.
"There is also no question that its current business models are not
sustainable and the companies must reorganize."
The Senate still must approve the legislation that has run into
substantial opposition by Republicans.
