Severely Wounded SSG Jose Pequeño, Army

Land O Lakes FL

19 Dec 2008

According to Dr. Rocco Armonda who is considered to be the Army’s
premiere neurosurgeon, SSG Jose Pequeño is one of the most severely
wounded American servicemen to return home from either of the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pequeño, a former Marine serving with the New Hampshire National
Guard, deployed to Iraq in May of 2005. He was there taking the place
of a younger member of his unit who he had counseled to stay home and
finish college. On March 1 of 2006 his life, and the lives of his
family, were forever changed when he was ambushed by Iraqi insurgents.
A rocket propelled grenade was launched into his Humvee. Shrapnel
entered the lower portion of Jose's brain.

His mother received a phone call from a neurosurgeon in Germany who
told her, "I finished the evaluation. Such a young person. Such a good
looking person. Such a young life. It’s such a shame he’s going to
die." What that doctor didn't know about was the power of Jose's will
to live and his family's determination to love him back to life.

On Friday, December 19th 2008 SSG Jose Pequeño, United States Army,
will come home to sleep in his own bed for the first time since he
deployed to Iraq in May of 2005. Jose is a rider, his sister is a
rider, and his step father is a rider. The family has invited the
Patriot Guard Riders to participate in the Homecoming celebration they
have planned for Jose.
