A few such examples: *Sexism* On the sexism side, I've seen people suggest that guns have no self defense value for women. For example, this commenter<http://www.topix.com/forum/chicago/T01SN57LBB2AOEMQJ#c14>said the following: Do you know of any women personally, who fought off an attacker with a gun??? What happens if the attacker manages to pull the gun from a trembling hand? This woman<http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm/dyn/aid/3319/context/archive>stated: Women and men don't own or use guns equally and sticking one in our hands doesn't give us equality. . . Women have been further endangered rather than protected by the proliferation of handguns. I find it incredibly sexist to assume that an armed woman would be unable to defend herself, and would instead have "trembling hands." This woman<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/11/03/woman-shoots-rapist-who-came-back-to-rape-her-for-a-second-time/>was able to shoot the rapist who broke into her home for a second time. This woman<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/08/25/911-home-invasion-phone-call-video-clip/>was also able to shoot a stalker who broke in and was trying to strangle her to death. This pregnant woman<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/07/pregnant-woman-defends-herself-against-home-invaders-by-using-a-shotgun/>was able to use a shotgun to save herself and her unborn child from two home invaders. Instead, it is the unarmed women<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/12/18/another-sad-story-of-the-police-failing-to-save-a-citizen/>that are most vulnerable to criminals<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/12/02/tragic-proof-that-guns-are-often-needed-for-effective-self-defense/>. I find it to be terribly degrading and sexist<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/03/19/firearms-rights-are-a-gender-equality-issue-too/>to suggest that women will be too mentally weak to use a firearm in defense of themselves or their loved ones. It is certainly their choice if some women don't wish to own guns and don't wish to defend themselves<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/10/03/pacifism-a-naive-and-dangerous-approach-to-life/>- however it wrong to try and force such defenselessness upon the rest of the female population. *Racism* I've previously discussed the racist roots of gun control<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/07/02/junk-guns-and-the-racist-history-of-gun-control-laws/>however that is not what I'm referring to today. Instead, I'm talking about the way that modern politicians and so-called "civil rights leaders"<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/29/jessie-jackson-slams-heller-gun-rights-ruling-and-endanger-civil-rights/>try to disarm African Americans on the theory that we are unable to use guns responsibly. Barack Obama made the following statement, suggesting that the (nearly 90% Caucasian<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheyenne%2C_Wyoming#Demographics>) population of Cheyenne can be allowed to own guns, while the (over 62% African American or Hispanic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Chicago#Ethnicity>) population of Chicago can't be trusted with guns: I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. . . Similarly, Blue Island, IL mayoral candidate Tommy Brown said<http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/mayor-promises-halt-gun-buy-back/story.aspx?guid=%7B2D5D2413-71A7-4B0E-BDF9-227968CE9AD3%7D>the following, then illegally ran a gun buy-back program<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/09/07/tommy-browns-blue-island-il-gun-buy-back-shut-down-after-half-an-hour/> : I'm tired of turning on the news and reading about black and Hispanic men and women being murdered . . . Something needs to be done about this. As an African American<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/01/my-biographical-and-demographical-information/>, I find it offensive when public figures basically tell me that, due to the color my skin, I'm incapable of using a gun responsibly. But what really adds insult to injury is that way that many of my fellow African Americans will support<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/18/chicago-students-petition-state-legislature-for-additional-ineffective-gun-control-laws/>the very people who are making such insulting statements<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/10/31/chicagos-mayor-daley-blames-guns-for-the-murder-of-hudsons-family/>. The problem of inner city violence stems from socioeconomic factors<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/11/14/why-chicagos-crime-rate-is-so-high/>, not the presence of guns<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/04/06/guns-are-not-the-cause-of-crime/>, and not the ethnic makeup of a city. Until those factors are addressed, the violence will continue. Infringing the constitutional rights<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/20/if-we-treated-other-basic-right-like-we-treat-the-2nd-amendment/>and self defense abilities<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/10/18/the-type-of-suffering-caused-by-handgun-bans/>of law abiding citizens just won't solve the problem of violent crime. While I sincerely hope that I am never in the position of having to fire a gun in self defense, I rest easier at night knowing that I could stop an armed robber<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/29/how-a-handgun-saved-glen-sousteks-life/>, racist attacker<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/07/31/bat-wielding-racist-assailant-shot-in-self-defense/>, terrorist<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/07/22/israeli-citizen-with-concealed-carry-stops-terrorist/>, or home invader<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/07/30/84-year-old-uses-handgun-to-stop-home-invader/>if the need arose. I also rest easier knowing that my girlfriend could stop a rapist<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/03/19/firearms-rights-are-a-gender-equality-issue-too/>or murderer<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/02/anti-gun-crusader-pat-regan-stabbed-to-death/>, rather than becoming a victim. The simple fact<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/04/the-district-of-columbia-an-example-of-failed-gun-control/>is that gun control laws don't stop criminals from getting guns<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/12/news-flash-criminals-ignore-laws-including-gun-control-laws/>, and instead only disarm the law abiding citizens, making them easier targets<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/07/24/oak-park-woman-robbed-at-gunpoint-despite-the-handgun-ban/>for the criminals. Nor is it justifiable to deprive law abiding citizens of their constitutional<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/26/district-of-columbia-v-heller-supreme-court-declares-gun-ownership-an-individual-right/> right<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/23/gun-ownership-is-a-right-not-a-privilege/>to keep and bear arms for self defense, just because criminals<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/25/personal-responsibility-is-lacking-in-our-society/>misuse guns, just as criminals misuse other tools<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/06/13/criminals-using-nail-guns/>. Given those facts, I would encourage my fellow law abiding citizens who do not yet own a gun to do the following: go shooting for the first time<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/13/take-a-friend-shooting-for-the-first-time/>, choose the proper gun for self defense<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/03/30/selecting-a-gun-for-home-defense/>, purchase <http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/11/purchasing-a-gun-online/>that gun, store the gun in a responsible manner<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/04/19/safe-and-responsible-gun-storage/>, and become proficient at safely<http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/04/27/the-basics-of-gun-safety/>using that gun.
