This editorial from our local paper this morning made some good points with some great zingers, too: ************************** Forces behind Bush precipitated the nation's decline
Robert Bonadonna Guest columnist Every now and then, on what I admit are rare occasions, my charitable and forgiving nature replaces my dominant desire for justice for miscreants and malefactors. The case in point is the joyous but overdue goodbyes to President Bush and his team of incompetents and villains. Our once great, powerful and wealthy nation, and our wonderful world, are on the brink of a long period of atonement for the sins, stupidity and ineptitude of the greatest assemblage of blunderers in recent history. The replacement team being put together by the incoming president and his pick of talented and experienced public servants, while providing promise and hope for the future, is saddled with inherited multiple messes that will be deeply daunting to clean up. Our ship of state that has been foundering in fog and folly for eight years will be difficult to get back on and even keel, even with the talents of this exceptional incoming captain and his new crew. How did we get into this mess and will the power structure that perpetrated this political plague learn from or acknowledge their complicity? I have a surprise for you. This fiasco was really not directly the fault of poor ill-equipped President Bush. He was the puppet of a power elite that used his name recognition to implement their agenda. The evil nucleus of this arrogant assemblage were the neo-cons who wanted a war, the financial sector who wanted to privatize our government, and some oil interests who lusted to capitalize on and control the sources of the black gold. These malefactors are really the culprits and architects of our present world financial collapse. These forces of evil, not poor hapless, manipulated President Bush, are the source of our present world meltdown. When President Bush was nominated in 1999, he put Dick Cheney in charge of his search for a VP. Unsurprisingly, Cheney could not come up with a candidate he could recommend more highly than himself. Together he, Rove and Rumsfeld pulled the puppet strings and President Bush danced to their terrible tunes. George W. Bush's salient lesson and legacy would be that our great nation must be more careful and critical of the criteria we use to select the leader of the free world. I believe and hope that we have voted in a team that will eventually be able to repair some of the damages done to our nation, and the world in the last eight years.
