Telegraph: Incident may be bloodiest single Israeli attack on Palestinian
civilians

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/6/2009) A prominent national Islamic civil rights and
advocacy group today condemned a reported Israeli massacre of more than 60
members of an extended Palestinian family in the Gaza Strip.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) cited a
report in Britain's Telegraph newspaper, which states:

"[A]s many as 60 members of the extended Samouni family were killed near
their homes in the Gazan town of Zeitoun while nine more died in hospital.
Dozens of bodies are believed to remain under the rubble of a large house
hit repeatedly by Israeli shelling in the incident. The International
Committee of the Red Cross has formally requested permission from the
Israeli army to visit the scene of the attack to establish the exact scale
of the slaughter."

"Unfortunately, this unimaginable carnage is being carried out with the
political support of our own government," said CAIR National Communications
Director Ibrahim Hooper. "Elected officials must stand up for justice and
demand an end to Israeli war crimes."

Hooper noted that President-elect Barack Obama today broke his silence on
the Gaza crisis to express deep concern about civilian deaths and vowed to
push for Middle East peace.

Earlier today, CAIR demanded that the Bush administration condemn the
"massacre" of more than 40 Palestinian civilians who sought shelter from
Israeli attacks at a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip.

More than 600 Palestinians, including whole families, have already been
killed in Israeli attacks.

Israel has barred journalists from entering Gaza to report on the results of
its attacks or on the humanitarian crisis caused by its blockade of food,
medicine and other essential supplies.

Yesterday, CAIR outlined 10 positive, pro-active steps American Muslims and
other people of conscience can take to help end Israeli attacks on the Gaza
Strip, restore the cease-fire and the flow of humanitarian aid and promote a
more balanced U.S. policy in the Middle East.

CAIR's "10 Steps to Help Gaza" included taking part in the upcoming "Let
Gaza Live" National March on Washington this Saturday in Lafayette Park
outside the White House (http://www.answercoalition.org) and signing CAIR's
online petition urging American leaders to speak "in favor of peace and
justice for all parties in the current humanitarian crisis unfolding in the
Gaza Strip" (http://petition.cair.com/).

Under international law, Israel is an occupying power that is required to
protect those under its occupation. The claim that Israel no longer occupies
the Gaza Strip is disingenuous and deceitful. Israel controls all land, sea
and air access to that impoverished area, turning it into the world's
largest open-air prison camp.

For many months, Israel has denied humanitarian aid to Gaza's civilian
population, a blockade that by itself can be regarded as an act of war under
international law. Israel's blockade of 1.5 million people is a violation of
the Geneva Convention. By purposefully harming Palestinian civilians, the
Israel military is committing the serious war crime of collective
punishment. Israel has kept innocent Palestinians under a perpetual state of
war for more than six decades.

The claim that the Palestinian side broke the cease-fire is also false. As
reported by CNN's Rick Sanchez, Israel broke the truce in early November.
Sanchez stated: "I've checked with some of the folks here at our
international desk, and I went to them and asked, what was he (Mustafa
Barghouti, a Palestinian legislator) talking about, and do we have any
information on that? Which they confirmed, two months ago — this is back in
November — there was an attack. It was an Israeli raid that took out six
people."

The leader of an Islamic group apologized Monday for a sign that showed a
swastika inside the Star of David during a demonstration outside the state
Capitol. The man carrying the sign, identified only as a college student
from Oklahoma City, has been banned from future protests or demonstrations
sponsored by the *Oklahoma City chapter of the Council on American-Islamic
Relations, said Razi Hashmi, the organization's executive director.* The
organization distributed rules before the demonstration that no offensive
signs or banners would be tolerated, he said.

Monday's event was held to protest Israel's military offensive against Gaza
Strip's Hamas rulers. The sign was removed a couple of minutes after the
demonstration started and the man left without incident, Hashmi said. "The
Star of David is a sacred symbol of faith and Muslims are stressed by Islam
to respect all symbols of faith and I apologize," Hashmi said. "This (sign)
does not reflect our personal views."

OKLAHOMA CITY — About 200 Palestinian supporters marched in front of the
state Capitol at noon Monday urging the U.S. to take a neutral stand in the
Mideast instead of supporting Israel.

Leaders said the killing of innocent bystanders, particularly children, in
the Gaza Strip must stop.

The marchers repeatedly shouted "Free, free Palestine."

*Michael Abdulaziz-Gipson, a board member of the Council on American-Islamic
Relations, Oklahoma Chapter*, said the group is calling on public officials
and congressmen to stop the Israeli attacks and potential occupation of the
Gaza Strip.

He urged members of the public to contact their representatives in

NORTON WANTS HEARINGS ON AIRTRAN MISTREATMENT OF MUSLIM PASSENGERS AND
CONTINUING REPORTS OF SIMILAR INCIDENTS AT OTHER AIRLINES -

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a member of
the Homeland Security Committee and the Aviation Subcommittee in the House,
and a former chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said
today that she will seek a hearing on airline practices following the
expulsion of eight American citizens and a permanent legal resident from an
AirTran flight at Reagan National Airport on New Year's Day.

Apparently, remarks concerning the safest place to sit on a plane, from a
member of the group traveling to Orlando for a religious retreat, were
overheard by two teens and passed on, and all the passengers were required
to disembark and go through security again.

"We are left to wonder whether the humiliation to the targeted passengers
and the inconvenience to the others on AirTran would have occurred if the
same words had come from a person in jeans or a business suit instead of
Americans wearing garments associated with the Islamic faith," Norton said.

The refusal of AirTran to rebook the passengers even after they were cleared
by FBI agents or to refund their fare, "added insult to their injury," she
said. The airline apologized and agreed to a refund and return tickets only
after the incident ballooned and received national and international
attention.

The Congresswoman said: "The security reasons given by AirTran would be
laughable if they were not so ignorantly off the mark. Repeated reports of
similar incidents among the airlines demonstrate wholesale confusion about
how to judge hearsay and other impressions from passengers and airline
personnel about risks to security, and how to respond. Airline personnel
could be valuable, additional eyes and ears to existing security. However,
continuing incidents that humiliate some passengers and cause serious delays
and difficulty for others show that the airlines are so clueless that many
situations involving actual security risks could pass them by. Left to their
own devices, the airlines are allowing amateurs, posing as qualified
security personnel, to make high-stakes decisions, an invitation to abuse
based on an individual's faith, ethnicity, or race. The Congress has an
obligation to get to the bottom of these incidents, which smack of
deliberate and clumsy discrimination and to offer guidance."

JetBlue Airways and two officials with the U.S. Transportation Security
Administration have paid $240,000 to settle charges that they illegally
discriminated against an Iraqi-born U.S. resident who was barred from a
flight until he covered his T-shirt, which carried an Arabic phrase, his
attorneys announced yesterday.

The settlement paid Friday to Raed Jarrar, 30, of the District, ranks among
the largest of its kind since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks,
according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which represented him. The
payment came as another U.S. airline apologized to nine Muslim American
passengers from the Washington area who were removed from a New Year's Day
flight out of Reagan National Airport, prompting a discrimination complaint
by a Muslim civil rights group. . .

*Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic
Relations,*said the nine AirTran passengers ejected last week are
considering their
legal options.

LAHORE, Pakistan: When Muhammad Saad Iqbal arrived home here in August after
more than six years in U.S. custody, including five at the prison at
Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, he had difficulty walking, his left ear was severely
infected, and he was dependent on a cocktail of antibiotics and
antidepressants.

In November, a Pakistani surgeon operated on his ear, physical therapists
were working on lower back problems, and a psychiatrist was trying to wean
him off the drugs he carried around in a white plastic shopping bag.

The maladies, said Iqbal, 31, a professional reader of the Koran, are the
result of a gantlet of torture, imprisonment and interrogation for which his
Washington lawyer plans to sue the U.S. government. (MORE)
