The Jackson County Courthouse has been closed for business since early this morning after suspicious objects and possible hazardous material was found on the site. According to Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts, deputies who serve as guards were opening the front entrance of the building this morning when they came upon an open Bible and a U.S. flag in front of the door. When they removed the items, they noticed some white powder was on their uniforms, Roberts said. It was the white powder that spurred the courthouse lockdown, Roberts said. He didn’t say what page the Bible was opened to. Yellow police tape completely surrounds the building, keeping onlookers on sidewalks nearby. Jackson Street, which runs past the courthouse, is barracaded. Earlier this morning, officials told the gathering crowd outside the courthouse to stand upwind. A handful of people, including deputies and jail trustees, have been quarantined for decontamination for possible exposure to the suspicious powder. Jackson Hospital was in lock-down mode for about five minutes after being notified of the suspicious material at the courthouse. For those few moments, the public was advised to avoid coming to the hospital unless there was a life-threatening emergency. Employees were immediately posted at all entrances and exits, and as of noon remained stationed there as a precaution. During the brief lock-down, no one was allowed inside without identification and a statement of purpose, according to hospital spokesman Rosie Smith. Also, she said, everyone coming to the hospital throughout the morning was asked to use the front entrance. A hazmat team was standing ready near the back entrance of the hospital to assist in case someone had been exposed to a dangerous material.
