One precursor for its actions was Russia's making Russian citizens of a majority of Ossetia'a citizens and then declare it was "protecting its citizens"... Reminds one of the official reasons France and Britain involved themselves in Palestine -- "protecting specific religious groups" from Ottoman oppression... Except there, that is called Imperialism...
