Real Sex for Real Women (Hardcover) By Laura Berman PhD BuzzFlash is starting a new self-help section in its Progressive BuzzFlash Marketplace, and we thought why not start with sex? So we went with a bestseller -- and Oprah favorite (but don't hold that against it) -- by a Chicago-based sex therapist, Laura Berman PhD. This a good, common sense, easily accesible book about overcoming obstacles to pleasurable sex, primarily aimed at women, but you can be sure male partners are reading it too. (We will be offering a GLBT book on sex in the future.) "Real Sex for Real Women" got a bit of buzz because it has pretty explicit color pictures in it. But this is more than a "position" book (although it's got plenty of that and with multi-cultural couples who tend to be "real looking"); it covers the full array of emotional issues (intimacy for women vs. action for men), different age needs, etc. For the most part, Berman is careful not to pass judgment, but rather to promote anything that leads to healthy, pleasurable sex between couples (including, of course, sex toys). It's a good book for coming to terms with obstacles to a fulfilled sexual life for women, and the 250-page oversize format covers a lot of ground and provides practical advice on techniques and communciation. "Real Sex for Real Women" is written for females of any social or educational background. A healthy sexuality is not a class issue, after all. Additional note: Because of the explicit photos (although no genitalia are shown), we recommend that you don't keep this on the coffee table if you have children. It's definitely a bedroom book.
