PALM SPRINGS — A Palm Springs man was shot and killed this morning
after he overpowered an officer, bashed him several times in the head
and stole his gun, according to investigators and witnesses.
Authorities say the man, Mauricio Cruz, 35, got into a fight with
employees at a Mexican diner on Lake Worth Road in Palm Springs about
7:25 a.m., then tangled with the Palm Springs police officer as he
walked back to his duplex...
A second Palm Springs police officer, responding to an officer-in-
distress call, heard the gunshots. Officials say he shot at Cruz after
Cruz pointed his gun at him.
It was not clear whose bullets struck Cruz, but he was shot multiple
