It does, doesn't it. I think, like a lot of liberals who think they know what religious and conservative people are like, he found he was wrong on many levels. I think that made him take another look at the rest of his beliefs. Maybe some changed and some didn't but at least with this story he showed that realized that he had changed. Bet his buddies at Brown were surprised.
Reminds me when I went to college. I went to a pretty good Midwestern university (rated in the top 50 in the country), small liberal arts school. About half the people I went to school with were graduates of the eastern prep schools and had never been west of Philadelphia except to fly to California. They really had no idea what the rest of the country was like and it was a real culture shock to them. I had to laugh at my freshman roommate. We never got along because he would not accept that the values of the Midwest counted and I would not give them up. By his senior year he ended up marrying a girl from a small Midwestern town and settled in suburban Illinois very happily and then later managed a newspaper in small town Ohio. He also became very religious which he certainly was not when he started college. This Brown University student may have found some of the same thing going on in his life.
