My guess is that the Founding Fathers opted for the separation of Church and State in order to avoid the centuries of religious wars that had plagued Europe though they were inheritors of the Judeo- Christian spirit. (Which did not prevent their hostility to Jews and Catholics.) It created a split personality in citizens who now vote with their wallets rather than their soul.
