Murtha: Redefining corruption
US Representative John Murtha is a proud practitioner of the dark art of congressional earmarks. The federal largesse he's brought home to his southwestern Pennsylvania district easily tallies in the billions, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Meanwhile, firms benefitting from Murtha's earmarks have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to his campaign. This cozy practice has led a Washington watchdog group to label him "one of the most corrupt members of Congress." Now federal authorities are investigating a lobbying shop and several other outfits with close ties to the congressman. Murtha himself is unrepentant. "If I'm corrupt, it's because I take care of my district," he told the paper. It's time for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to tell her close ally to clean up his act.

If Murtha was a Republican, his party affiliation would be in every single sentence. Maybe Murtha proves corruption isn't limited to one party like the Globe believes.

It was time, a long time ago, for Speaker Pelosi to strip Murtha of his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee, and any other leadership positions. His prominence makes a joke out of Democratic claims to be less corrupt than the Republicans. They are, alas, no better, but we are worse off because of people like Murtha. And let us not forget that President Obama did not take on the earmark issue before signing the last budget. No guts?

60 minutes ran a piece about the Murtha airport he appropriated funds for. It is a gem. Security checks are fast, the whole shebang is state of the art, just beautiful. You can catch a flight out of there with great ease, they even have good parking. On the average, 20 people a day use it. There was no need to put an airport there, it was just pork.
