One region of the world is rife with calls to conquer and subjugate another region, and with prayers that the supreme being rain death and destruction upon its foes. And so the threatened region, instead of calling upon the belligerents to drop their aggressive rhetoric and teach their people the virtues of living at peace with others rather than trying to destroy or enslave them, vows to show more "respect" to the belligerents. Living in a Muslim country produces, as a "consequence," the certainty that Islam can be reconciled with "modernity and respect for human rights and a rejection of violence"? Then why do so many Muslims who have never lived anywhere except in Muslim countries believe so fervently that Islam rejects Western notions of human rights and sanctions violence?
