With America in a deep recession, questions about borrowing and lending have
taken center stage. This week Brad Doucet reminds us of Polonius's advice to
his son Laertes in Shakespeare's Hamlet: "Neither a borrower, nor a lender
be" followed by the explanation, "For loan oft loses both itself and friend.
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry."
Brad offers us a common-sense look at borrowing and lending from the
perspective of the individual and also looks at some of the implications of
the savings rate in China and the United States respectively.

Speaking of China, this week marks the twentieth anniversary of the massacre
of pro-freedom protestors in Tiananmen Square in Beijing by that country's
communist government. In the two decades since then China has moved rapidly
towards a free market economy with the result of growing economic
prosperity. But the government has been slow to abandon the "dictatorship of
the proletariats" in favor of the protection of individual rights. Still,
China will be of growing importance as a world power in decades to come.

than the U.S. government launching a new space race, it should unleash

Our friend Marsha Enright has been working to create the College of the
United States. She hopes to start it next year but is happy to announce an
event that will serve as a demonstration of, and introduction to, The
College's distinctive approach. But it will benefit participants regardless

It will be held in Chicago from Saturday, July 25 to Sunday, August 2, 2009.
