I have seen socialized medicine in the U.S. military. Dependent sick
call averaged 750 patients per day. I suggested that since the cost
of medicine was waived at the discretion of the command, we need only
charge 50 cents per patient visit to offset that cost and things would
change. The change was met by much weeping and wailing and gnashing
of teeth, but within a month the average had dropped to 150 patients
per day. No longer did women bring all four kids in to see the doctor
because one had a runny nose. They used the runny nose medicine they
still had from the previous visit.

I watch patients being discharged from our regional hospital grabbing
everything that is not locked down to take home because they think it
is theirs. Medicare or Medi-Cal is actually paying for it...not
really....as we only get about 75% of what it actually costs to treat
these patients. We cannot leave electronic thermometers in the room
or they will be taken. They insist on wearing their gowns home and
some even try to take the bedding.

When you pour slop into the trough, the pigs will run to it....just my
observation from a childhood on a farm. :-)
