I've just been watching a fascinating documentary on More 4 called "Us Now". It's basically about the stuff I've been talking and writing about for a decade now, about how the "new media" (to give it its current trendy name) but in reality the paradigm shift in communications that's been going on over the past two decades that is as epoch changing as Guttenburg or Newcomen can be harnessed to change the way we are governed. It's well worth a watch and is all available online at http://vimeo.com/4489849 In particular, towards the end there's a section with Milliband min and Osborne (separately) squirming a bit about what it means for conventional government structures. A priceless piece from Milliband in particular about how this "is not DIY government because the role of government will have to remain to provide the resources for such decision making structures around the country to fund their decisions, after all who is it that provides the funding at the moment but government!". Part of the reason for highlighting it here was for Sean - I wondered if it might be worth looking to see if there's anyone interesting one could have at an LAF event. There were lots of good talking heads participants, like the Chief Executive of Zopa (the collaborative online lending/banking system), several academics and business strategists and so on. There was one in particular that interested me, because he was coming over all "enthusiastic anarchist", whilst I knew him as a name involved in the Jubilee 2000 Coalition (that ran the "Drop the Debt" campaign and was closely involved with the New Economics Foundation and so on). So hardly what one would imagine as non-statist. But Paul Miller (http://www.paulmiller.org/) of the "School of Everything" amongst other projects (http://schoolofeverything.com/) had some interesting stuff to say - even suggesting for example that things we had previously assumed only governments could do (he mentioned building a London-Birmingham rail link - though of course there already is one so I'm not entirely sure why it was a good illustration) could be done by collaborative decision making and funding by the people who would want to use it or see their property double in value or whatever. Anyway - might be worth looking at. I have long believed that the ICT revolution, like the Printing Revolution and the Industrial Revolution before it, is a phenomenon that has the potential to usher in a new world of free people collaborating together (as Miller said "representative government was designed on the premise that people are in general stupid; now we see that is not the case and that given the right tools people are able not just to make their voices heard more in representative government but to sideline it completely and just get on and do the things they would once have lobbied government to do for them" - or words to that effect). Wherever they may have come from politically (and I am no paragon there either) such people can be our allies if they have really seen the light I saw a decade or so ago about the potential for such systems to enable people like never before and disable conventional government.
