Now Playing at Reason.tv: Tyler Cowen on Creating Your Own Economy,
Embracing Your Inner Autistic, and Obama's Reckless Fiscal Policy

At the recent Freedom Fest conference in Las Vegas, *Reason* magazine Editor
in Chief Matt Welch sat down with Tyler Cowen, the prolific George Mason
University economics professor, popular blogger, *New York Times * columnist,
and author of the brand new *Create Your Own Economy: The Path to Prosperity
in a Disordered Worl**d* .

Cowen is one of the country's foremost explainers of how free markets and
international exchange produce much of what we enjoy about modern life, and
his latest work continues exploring the theme. "In broadest terms," he says,
"I view this as a book about the power of the individual, the importance of
individual liberty, and how we can all create our own liberties essentially
by using the web and the information economy to create streams of meaning."

Cowen talks about how society is becoming more autistic ("this is a good
thing!"), how everyday people can be happier than Bill Gates, and how the
"economy of attention" differs from that of pure dollars and cents. He also
has sharply critical words for how a Democratic Washington is handling
economic policy: "On fiscal policy we are absolutely heading off a cliff."

As Nasty As They Wanna Be: How the Friars Club roasts expanded the First
Amendment

Roasts are the Rodney Dangerfields of free speech: They don't get any
respect. But as Contributing Editor Greg Beato writes, years before Lenny
Bruce got busted for subjecting audiences to obscene grammar lessons or
George Carlin compiled his list of seven words you can never say on
television, Milton Berle, Henny Youngman, and other Friars Club yuk-meisters
were pushing the boundaries of free expression.

Soda Tax: The Revenge

The newish head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Thomas Freiden-the man who helped bring trans fat and smoking bans to NYC as
the city's health commissioner-wants to have another go at taxing soda.

As usual, the goal is both to raise money (because Americans are helpless in
the thrall of demon sugar, and therefore relatively price insensitive)
*and*to discourage consumption (because that extra three cents on my
12 ounce
bottle of Coke is going to make me think twice about my Fatty McFat
lifestyle).

Doctors in Training

A federal appeals court has ruled San Carlos, California, police did not
have the right to break into Brian Hopkins home because they allegedly
believed he might be in a diabetic coma. Hopkins got into a minor traffic
accident with another driver. They got out but didn't see any damage, so
Hopkins drove off. The woman apparently thought he'd been drinking, so she
followed him home and called police. Police knocked on his door but didn't
get an answer. They say they feared that instead of being drunk he was
having a diabetic seizure, so they forced their way in. A jury found Hopkins
not guilty of DUI, and now he is suing the police.
