I work in a regional hospital and can attest to the high percentage of
third-party payments and the abuse of the system. I don't believe in
censorship either. But I think our public school system has created a
huge population of ninnies. I don't get TV where I live and have not
see 200 hours of it in my entire life, but I am exposed to some of it
when I go into a patient's room and see some of the medical ads.
An ad for a sleeping medicine warns of some of the side effects..."may
cause drowsiness". Oh my! Drowsiness? In my sleep medication?
An ad reporting that it is a 50% improvement over not taking it. What
they don't tell you is that it costs a lot of money and normally 3 out
of 10,000 people with the condition will die from it, but if everyone
took it, only 2 out of 10,000 people would die from it.
We are being forced to spend $120 million to build a new wing because
the 33 beds in the old wing can not have patients after 2012 unless we
spend $110 million to retrofit if to meet new earthquake standards.
It held up with no problem during the 7.4 earthquake in 1980, but new
standards have been ordered. What that amounts to is the government
is willing to force us to guarantee that if all the rooms are full and
the old wing collapses, the 33 lives of the patients are saved. Do
the math....It comes to more than $3 million per patient. And you
want to know why things are so expensive?
