Hollywood, the term "Dark Ages" was conceived by the Italian scholar Petrarch around 1330 when he used it as a criticism of the Late Latin literature. Popular culture has expanded it as a pejorative to encompass the entire period between Classic Roman Antiquity and the High Middle Ages. Most modern scholars avoid the term though.
