There is no way to verify anything except through direct experience. As an example: I just read that The Wall Street Journal (Rupert Murdochs baby), printed a story about Afghanistan, saying that the top general said we're losing to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Then I heard on TV that the general didn't say that at all. Short of seeing the general on TV myself so I could hear what he said, I have no idea what to believe.
