Senator Accused Of Masturbating At YMCA BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A prosecutor said Vermont state Sen. Edward Flanagan (D) is the target of a police investigation into allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct at the Burlington YMCA. Chittenden County State's Attorney Thomas Donovan said the allegation that Flanagan was seen masturbating in a men's fitness area at the Y has been referred to a police sex-crimes unit. Flanagan, a former four-term state auditor and Democratic U.S. Senate nominee in 2000, suffered brain and other injuries in a 2005 car crash. The allegation against Flanagan was first raised by two other Y patrons with its management, and the Burlington Y suspended him. He has previously denied any misconduct, but did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Wednesday. Flanagan said earlier this month that he is reconsidering his run for lieutenant governor in the wake of recent allegations of lewd conduct at the city YMCA. The claims, unearthed by Seven Days columnist Shay Totten, come from YMCA patron Tiki Archambeau, who told WPTZ.com he saw Flanagan masturbating on a bench in the men's wellness center -- an adults-only area of the YMCA locker room. Archambeau said he and another patron saw Flanagan masturbating on a bench between the YMCA sauna and nearby showers. "Frankly I'm kind of offended at seeing that in the Y. I don't think that's right," Archambeau told WPTZ.com. Flanagan maintains the accusation is completely false, but has since offered an apology. Sources inside the YMCA told Totten of several instances that concerned them, including one incident where Flanagan allegedly was running on a YMCA treadmill wearing only shoes, socks and a watch. Totten also outlines a previous story published by Seven Days in December. That story outlined some of Flanagan's statehouse behavior, which included sorting candies on his committee room desk and lying prone on the floor. According to he article, titled "Continuing Ed," Flanagan suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2005.
