Kennedy spearheaded a move to persuade the Legislature to create a law
that prevented then-Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican, from appointing a
Republican to fill John Kerry’s U.S. Senate seat had Kerry beaten
President Bush in the 2004 election.

Now, five years later, Kennedy wants state lawmakers to change state
law to give Democrat Gov. Deval Patrick, a fellow Democrat and
supporter of President Obama, the ability to appoint an interim
replacement to Kennedy’s seat should Kennedy be unable to continue
serving.
