The Myth of the Multiplier: Why the stimulus package hasn't reduced
unemployment
>From our November issue, Veronique de Rugy explains that government spending
doesn't boost national income or standard living. It merely redistributes
it.

We're All Felons, Now: Perpetual public fear of crime has turned us all into
criminals.
Gallup polling shows that an increasing number of Americans believe violent
crime is getting worse, even as it's been getting dramatically better.
Reason Senior Editor Radley Balko argues that the disconnect is due to
politicians who exploit our fear of crime to get elected. The result is an
ever-expanding criminal code, more and more powers for police and
prosecutors, and a state of affairs where it's nearly impossible for
well-meaning citizens to abide by the law. Ironically, Balko writes, our
perpetual fear of crime has created a society where everyone is now a
potential criminal.

Treating the Elderly Like Spoiled Brats: The case against giving a tax-free
bonus to Social Security recipients
The federal government recently announced that for the first time since
cost-of-living adjustments were begun in 1975, Social Security recipients
will not get an annual raise in their monthly checks. In response, President
Obama has proposed giving every Social Security recipient a tax-free $250
bonus in lieu of a cost-of-living adjustment. But as Steve Chapman writes,
the people hit hardest by the recession are those who have seen their
earnings vanish along with their jobs. Social Security recipients, on the
other hand, are assured of a stable stream of income even when companies are
cutting payroll with a chainsaw.

How Do You Say "Ayn Rand Moment" in Hindi?
The "Howard Roark effect" is sweeping India, writes Jennifer Burns, author
of a new book on Ayn Rand. Apparently, Indians perform the second most
Google searches for Dame Ayn after folks in the U.S., and Ayn Rand's book
have sold 50,000 copies there since 2005, about the same sales are enjoyed
by John Grisham.

You Don't Look Like an American
Hector Veloz spent eight months in prison for receiving stolen property and
thought he was being released, only to be turned over to Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be deported to Mexico. Veloz, the son of a
Vietnam vet, swore he was an American citizen. But officials refused to
believe him. It took him nine months to prove to a judge that he was a
citizen. But ICE appealed the decision. All told, Veloz spent 13 months
behind bars, in addition to his sentence for receiving stolen property,
while trying to prove he was a citizen.
