The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal: No Impact Man fails to make an
impression

Reason.tv producer Dan Hayes watches No Impact Man, a documentary that
chronicles the Beavan family's quest to live in Manhattan while giving up
toilet paper, any products with packaging, cars and public transit,
elevators, plastic bags, and shopping for anything new.

Reason.tv: Light Bulbs vs. The Nanny State

In September, the European Union banned the sale of 100-watt incandescent
light bulbs, with lawbreakers facing up to $70,000 in fines. Over the next
few years, bans on lower-wattage bulbs kick in. In the United States,
similar legislation comes into play in 2012. The idea is to kickstart the
market for compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), which use less energy than
conventional incandescents. Although CFLs present any number of problems
(even beyond a much higher initial cost), governments all over the globe are
determined to make them the new standard.

Invented in its modern form by Thomas Edison in 1879, the light bulb became
synonymous with a brilliant idea. Now, it seems, it's just one more symbol
of a nanny state that increasingly dictates more choices in our public and
private lives.

I'm late to note it, but Glenn Greenwald's essay on the Glenn Beck
phenomenon and the tea party movement is a remarkable read, not least
because it shows one of Obama's critics on the left reaching out to his
critics on the right. Greenwald doesn't think much of Beck himself, writing
that the talk show host "doesn't really appear to have any actual,
identifiable political beliefs; he just mutates into whatever is likely to
draw the most attention for himself and whatever satisfies his emotional
cravings of the moment." And Greenwald is by no means fond of every element
of the tea parties, noting that "this anti-Obama sentiment is being
exploited by run-of-the-mill GOP operatives who have no objective other than
to undermine Democrats and return the Republicans to power." But he's also
aware that "there are some identifiable -- and plainly valid -- underlying
causes to these protests that are neither Republican nor Democratic, or even
left or right"...

Daily Brickbat
British Bobbies

British prosecutors have charged 11 individuals with impersonating police
officers during a G20 protest earlier this year. But the 11 weren't exactly
dressed in police uniforms. Leah Borromeo, for instance, was dressed in
overalls rolled down to her waist, exposing her bra. Others were carrying
toy machine guns. "If I'm guilty of anything, it's impersonating a
stripper," said Borromeo.
