* * * Some have wondered what to do with one's drawings. There is no formal event called "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day." As I point out in my latest post, the cartoonist who came up with that name intended it in jest (though she was seriously sticking up for the First Amendment). That cartoonist has in fact pulled her own cartoon from her web page. But to me that's beside the point; this is an informal movement, and people are free to participate or not at will. There is no formal place to send one's cartoon. For me the obvious answer was to place the cartoon on my own web page.
If you do not have a blog or web page, you are welcome to send your drawing to me. I have offered to publish, at my discretion, other drawings of Mohammed. One thing I've done is register a box with the local UPS store, in order to limit the publication of my physical address. You might also do a bit of research, or take a class, about home security. For example, the NRA offers a personal safety course that has nothing to do with firearms. You can do simple things like secure your windows and make sure you sleep with a cell phone nearby (in case somebody cuts your hard line). I've taken controversial stands on religion, speech, immigration, and abortion. While it is absurd that we have to worry about drawing a cartoon of a religious figure, that's the world we in fact live in. I believe I should be politically active now, before it becomes truly life-threatening. It's easier to fight now than later.
