The Telling Detail/WaPo/ did a cutesy little personality profile <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/02/AR2010050202769_pf.html> on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over the weekend, but I didn't get around to reading it until this afternoon. The entire article has one small graf worth reading. Here it is:
Young Nancy D'Alesandro first took note of the speaker's power on a trip to Ocean City, when her father, the influential mayor of Baltimore, had to pull the family car over for a passing motorcade. "It was the speaker coming through. Oh my God, the speaker of the House," Pelosi recalled about Rayburn's entourage.In other words, Pelosi went into politics so she could push you out of her way.

The same thing was true regarding Robert Moses. I highly recommend
Robert Caro's fantastic biography. Moses was something of a
dictator who argued that the best and brightest graduates of the
Ivy League schools should run the country on behalf of the
unwashed masses.

My Dad hated Sam Rayburn, "the sorry, crooked, bastard." Maybe
it's good he never lived to witness Nancy. Sam looks a whole lot
better now, as does Adam Clayton Powell, Harlem's former Congressman.

Baltimore mob boss.

I heard another interview with her shortly after she was made
Speaker, in which she talked about why she went into politics. She
described her wonderful childhood memories of jobless men coming
to their home, hats in their hands, where her Dad, the mayor,
handed out patronage jobs. Clearly, she loved the feeling it gave
her to know that he had the power to distribute compassion to
people who would be very grateful to him.
