'The Hobbit' finally close to getting greenlight After several years of delays that have frustrated eager fans, moviegoers may soon return to Middle-earth. Warner Bros., its subsidiary New Line Cinema and partner Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer appear to be close to giving a final go-ahead for production of the hugely anticipated two-part "Lord of the Rings" prequel, "The Hobbit," according to several people familiar with the matter. Production on the two pictures to be directed by Peter Jackson, which together will cost nearly $500 million, is expected to begin in January in order for the first film to be released in December 2012.
