*Remember those homophobic remarks from NY Gov. Candidate Carl Paladino last week? Turns out his 23-yr old GAY nephew (who was working on his campaign) got somewhat pissed and hasn't shown up to work this week. It has also been discovered that Paladino was the landlord to TWO gay bars recently! *Dana Chivvis <http://www.aolnews.com/team/dana-chivvis>* Contributor AOL News Surge Desk (Oct. 13) -- New York gubernatorial candidate Carl "There Is Nothing to Be Proud of in Being a Dysfunctional Politician" Paladino<http://www.aolnews.com/elections/article/ny-republican-gov-candidate-makes-anti-gay-remarks/19668393>grievously offended the country's gay community last weekend. As it turns out, that community includes his 23-year-old nephew and the candidate's former tenants. Jeff Hannon, 23, who was working on his uncle's campaign in Buffalo, told the New York Post<http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/uncle_slam_gay_nephew_blasts_carl_gKUExcwnaEqJ6SdZ8WLugN>that he was "very offended by [Paladino's] comments." He reportedly has not showed up to work this week, but the Post notes that he tweeted in support of Obama's extension of federal benefits to same-sex government employees. And as if all that hasn't spoon-fed rival Andrew Cuomo's campaign a big enough saucer of delicious foot-in-mouth soup, the New York Daily News has dug up<http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/10/13/2010-10-13_gop_governor_hopeful_carl_paladino_cashed_on_buffalo_gay_clubs_cobalt_buddies_ii.html>state records showing that Paladino was the landlord of two gay bars in Buffalo, N.Y., from 2004 to 2006. [image: Carl Paladino's Gay Nephew Jeff Hannon Disagrees with His Remarks] Kathy Willens, AP New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, second from right, speaks to a group of Orthodox Jewish rabbis during a campaign stop Sunday at Karlsburg Rabbinical College in Brooklyn, N.Y. Hannon and the proprietors of the gay bars (one of whom was Paladino's son William, according to the Daily News) may or may not feel better after reading the embattled candidate's public apology<http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2010/10/carl-paladino-apologizes.html#ixzz12FRzdFzH> . In the statement he explains clearly who and what was to blame: the erring nature of humanity ("I have made mistakes all my life -- as we all have,") the probably since-fired campaign aide who wrote the damning words ("I was handed a script") and, of course, the press ("I said other things that the press misinterpreted and misstated.") Paladino does take responsibility for "some things for which I should have chosen better words." He gives no word on which "things" he is referring to, but one can make an educated guess after watching the video of his speech below. In response to the apology, New York State Democratic Committee Chairman Jay Jacobs released the following statement: "It took two days of getting denounced by Democrats and Republicans alike for Carl Paladino to see fit to issue his non-apology. The fact that even now Paladino can't see his remarks as what they were -- a cynical attempt to divide New Yorkers -- shows just how out-of-touch he is with New York values. Non-apology not accepted." The full text of Paladino's apology is reprinted below the video. Stay tuned to find out if he decides to serve himself a bigger slice of humble pie. *Paladino's apology, as posted on his Facebook page<http://www.facebook.com/pages/Carl-Paladino/130595325508> .* *I am Carl Paladino, a father, a husband, a builder and a business owner. I am neither perfect, nor a career politician. I have made mistakes in this campaign -- I have made mistakes all my life-- as we all have. I am what I am -- a simple man who works hard, trusts others, and loves his family and fears for the future of our State. Yesterday I was handed a script. I redacted some contents that were unacceptable. I did also say some things for which I should have chosen better words. I said other things that the press misinterpreted and misstated. I sincerely apologize for any comment that may have offended the Gay and Lesbian Community or their family members. Any reference to branding an entire community based on a small representation of them is wrong. My personal beliefs are: 1) I am a live and let live person. 2) I am 100% against discrimination of any group. I oppose discrimination of any kind in housing, credit, insurance benefits or visitation. 3) I am 100% against hate crimes in any form. 4) I am in support of civil agreements and equal rights for all citizens. 5) My position on marriage is based on my personal views. I have the same position on this issue as President Barack Obama. I have previously stated I would support a referendum by New York voters. I have proposed Initiative and Referendum so New Yorkers can decide important issues like this. 6) The portrayal of me as anti-gay is inconsistent with my lifelong beliefs and actions and my prior history as a father, employer and friend to many in the gay and lesbian community. I am concerned with the future for all our citizens, gay, straight, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim and Agnostic. Although I am not perfect, I do admit my mistakes. I will reach out to leaders of the gay community to educate me on how to better represent my support for the rights of all citizens. If elected as your governor I will stand and fight for all gay New Yorkers' rights. I ask you for forgiveness on my poorly chosen words and the publication by others not involved with our campaign of unredacted script that did not reflect my oral statement or match my personal feelings. Please go to my website www.paladinoforthepeople.com to learn more detail about the issues including my staunch support for civil rights for all New Yorkers. -- Carl Paladino * *More:* * http://www.aolnews.com/surge-desk-elections/article/carl-paladinos-gay-nephew-jeff-hannon-very-offended-by-remarks/19672334 * -- Together, we can change the world, one mind at a time.
