Carl Palidino Loses NY Gubernatorial Debate, Leaves Stage and Goes to Bathroom, ex-Madam wins gay bar debate
Fringe Political Parties Provide Entertainment In New York Gubernatorial Debate Posted in Politics by Rudi Stettner A decision to include all candidates for Governor of New York State made for some interesting comic relief yesterday. When Republican Carl Paladino ran off stage to use the bathroom, he will probably gain the support of many voters who supported term limits and believe that some politicians just don’t know when it is time to go. Aside from Republican Party candidate Carl Paladino and Democrat Andrew Cuomo, the following candidates took part in the debate. 1.Charles Barron of the Freedom Party, 2.Kristin Davis (the former “Manhattan madam”) of the Anti-Prohibition Party 3. Howie Hawkins of the Green Party 4. Jimmy McMillan of the Rent is 2 Damn High Party 5. Warren Redlich of the Libertarian Party The candidates provided some good one liners and quotable quotes. Of all the responses to a question about gay marriage,The Rent Is 2 Damn High Party candidate Jimmy McMillan’s response was the most memorable when he said “If You Want to Marry a Shoe, I’ll Marry You.” The prostitution scandal of disgraced former Governor Eliot Spitzer set the stage for the entry of his reputed former madam, Kristin Davis into the gubernatorial race. Her line slamming her opponents was crude, funny and sadly true. “The career politicians in Albany are the biggest whores in this state. I might be the only person sitting on this podium qualified to deal with them.” She also slammed the M.T.A. (Metropolitan Transit Authority) as follows. “The key difference between the M.T.A. and my former escort agency is I operated one set of books and I offered on-time and reliable service,” Humor in which politicians are compared to prostitutes and found to be worse than the prostitutes is devastatingly effective and in many cases sadly true. Kristin Davis as a former madam is in a unique position on the campaign trail of being able to deliver such zingers with a special resonance. Davis also slammed an attack on a stock transfer tax with a sly nod towards Carl Paladino’s controversial remarks about homosexuals when she said the tax would make “businesses will leave the state faster than Carl Paladino at a gay bar.” Warren Redlich of the Libertarian Party made some dry and pointed jabs at his opponents and predecessors with the following remark. “My name’s Warren Redlich. I’m not your typical New York politician. I’ve never been caught with a prostitute. My dad wasn’t governor and I’ve never been convicted of a crime.” The following are some other memorable lines. Charles Barron: “Asking Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino to end corruption is like asking an arsonist to help us put out fires” New York State Libertarian Party candidate Warren Redlich. “It’s the No [School] Administrator Left Behind policy. We have to cut the spending.” “I could solve the state’s problems with a six-pack and a pizza.” Republican Carl Paladino “It’s a disgrace the way we care more for the needs of the United Teachers Assoc than we do for the child” The Daily News reported as follows on the most extravagant promise, made by Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins. “Then there was Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins, who literally promised a government job to each and every unemployed person in the state. Which, at last count, would mean asking taxpayers to pay salaries and benefits for more than 800,000 people.” Most observers give Andrew Cuomo the best grades in the debate for simply appearing relaxed in front of the camera and in command of his facts. Carl Paladino was seen as awkward and shaky with his command of factual information. Carl Paladino could have done much better advancing his cause if he would have put his money behind a more photogenic candidate whose ideas he shared. After today’s debate, it will take a miracle for Paladino to win.
