John, Anyone whom the Speaker of the House delegates that authority to may preside over the House. The regular Speaker may also limit the time in which another can act as Speaker, but the total time is limited to only 3 days before another appointment is needed, unless of course the Speaker is ill then the limit is extended to 10 days.
If the speaker is absent and has not identified a replacement, then the House of Representatives shall elect a Speaker Pro tempore, which means a temporary speaker. If the officer of the Speaker is vacant they shall elect a Speaker pro tempore until a permanent Speaker can be elected.
