RIVERSIDE – A Palm Springs man was charged in federal court Wednesday
after his arrest on suspicion of threatening to kill a Washington
state congressman, his family and friends.

Voice mail messages allegedly recorded by Charles Habermann for
Congressman Jim McDermott last month threatened to put the lawmaker
‘in the trash’ for his views, and those of other Democrats, on tax
cuts and unemployment insurance.

The FBI interviewed Habermann the day after the threats and about
others to a California congresswoman.
Last year, Habermann, 32, was warned about threats to a member of the
California State Assembly over a health care bill.

Conviction of the allegations could bring a 10-year prison sentence.

Habermann reportedly has a $3 million trust fund. Federal authorities
contend Habermann admitted to making the calls because he was angry
about taxes, but said he wouldn't risk losing his trust fund by
attacking McDermott.
