Posted this morning at Electric Politics, a podcast interview with Dr. Ha-Joon Chang, an economist at the University of Cambridge. In Ha- Joon's words, neoliberal economists are like "Catholic theologians in medieval Europe." And it's true: neoliberal doctrines impose an ideological straight-jacket of enormous cost. It would be an entirely different situation if data -- facts -- supported neoliberal explanations or policy but the facts not only don't cooperate, they tell us pretty much the opposite of everything neoliberals want us to believe.
There's no fixing it. Neoliberal ideas are doomed to go the way of the whalebone corset, though the neoliberals don't know it yet. Please do yourself a favor and read Ha-Joon's latest book, 23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism. It's a synthesis of most of his life's work, in easily accessible terms. And it's the future of economics.
