that's fascinating Bob

I just went on a tour of Monticello 2 weeks ago and though they told us who
was a slave and that he was in debt they never connected these facts

They told us he had over 600 slaves and I asked how many he freed. The
guide said 7, two during his life and 5 at his death. Additionally his
daughter let Sally Hemmings "have her time," meaning the Jefferson-Randolph
family still owned her but she was free to leave and move to town and work
for herself. I kind of wanted to know if a free woman of color would have
been subject to rape and other violence in a way that a woman "having her
time" but still legally the property of an important white family would not
have been.

I left the tour disturbed that Thomas Jefferson was such a
modernist/futurist/rationalist and also such a libertarian and revolutionary
but did not find a way to free (more of) those slaves. But you are saying
his creditors would have then just "re-possessed" them and probably treated
them worse (apparently Jefferson tried to keep slave families together).

What's ironic is that his debt may prove (though he did buy a lot of books
and French wine and devices) that slavery was inefficient and may have not
produced any wealth (in terms of opportunity cost -- it produced less wealth
than a free labor market would have) (and that black political groups who
imagine trillions of dollars of 20th century wealth was produced by their
ancestors being whipped as they hoed a cotton field are just delusional).
He had 600 slaves and still couldn't turn a profit.
