If you're a professor at UCLA, it can end your career. Professor James Enstrom was let go from his job at UCLA after 34 years because he challenged scientific research that the California authorities used to enact policies that strictly regulate emissions from diesel fuel. Enstrom was a successful whistleblower who exposed the fact that the lead "scientist" behind the study that led to the new policies, Hien Tran, had falsely claimed to have a Ph.D. from UC Davis — when in fact, Tran had purchased it for $1,000 from a diploma mill. That's right. While the fake Ph.D.'s questionable research led to stringent new air pollution regulations affecting the California economy, UCLA was getting rid of a real Ph.D. for speaking out. For telling the "inconvenient truth," Professor Enstrom's career is now on the line. My organization, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education ( www.thefire.org), works to defend free speech and preserve liberty on America's college campuses. We are fighting for justice for Professor Enstrom. Professor Enstrom's case is not just about his own career and research. UCLA's actions will discourage any professor at UCLA — or in the entire University of California system — from publishing controversial findings or speaking out against "politically correct" science. The message the university is sending to its professors and researchers is clear: "Don't rock the boat, because you might be next." There are real costs to campus censorship. FIRE has launched an aggressive public awareness campaign essential to winning Dr. Enstrom's case - as Justice Brandeis famously said, "Sunlight is the best disinfectant."
