Christians are at the extreme end of homosexual demonization. The Vatican still promulgates contemptuous teachings about homosexuality —“objectively disordered,” says the Catholic Catechism. Early in his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI broke with a tradition that had long quietly accommodated homosexuals in the clergy, now forbidding entry into the priesthood of anyone having “a gay orientation” or “deep- seated homosexual tendencies.”
For the first one hundred plus years of judaism's Conservative movement's existence, the movement did not allow for the ordination of openly gay men and lesbians. In addition, Conservative rabbis who performed same-sex commitment ceremonies did so without the Law Committee’s sanction. Then on December 6, 2006, the CJLS completed its deliberation regarding the halakhic status of gay men and lesbians. The CJLS decided that the halakha of the Conservative movement now says that: Conservative rabbis, synagogues, and institutions can perform or host same-sex commitment ceremonies and are free to hire openly gay rabbis and cantors. Conservative rabbis, synagogues, and other institutions may continue not to permit commitment ceremonies and not to hire openly gay or lesbian rabbis and cantors. In Islam, homosexuals are condemned in the story of Lot's people in the Qur'an (15:73; 26:165) and in the last address of the Prophet Muhammad. However, attraction of men to beautiful male youths has been a part of the culture of some Islamic societies and the attraction is not generally condemned in itself. With regard to lesbian homosexuality, some have argued that since penetration is not involved, female homosexual acts should be less severely punished.
