Sherrod Brown United States Senator responds

Dear Mr. House:
Thank you for getting in touch with me regarding Attorney General Eric
Holder. I have heard from several Ohioans sharing your concern about
Attorney General Holder’s role in the “Fast and Furious” Operation.
In response to the growing violence on the United States-Mexico border, the
Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives
(ATF), which is tasked with stopping gun trafficking and the illegal flow of
guns into Mexico, established Project Gunrunner in 2006. The goal of Project
Gunrunner is to work with domestic and international law enforcement
agencies, firearms dealers, and other partners to investigate, disrupt, and
dismantle the weapons trafficking network which arms Mexican drug cartels.
Since 2006, ATF has indentified more than 2,500 defendants for prosecutions
due to the success of Project Gunrunner.
Of the 4,500 active Project Gunrunner investigations taking place across the
United States, one investigation in Arizona called “Fast and Furious” has
rightfully drawn criticism. This investigation allowed guns to cross the
border to allow ATF agents to track Mexican drug cartels. Tragically, one of
the guns from the “Fast and Furious” Operation was used to murder Border
Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
The Department of Justice and Congress are both conducting investigations of
the “Fast and the Furious” Operation and the role of agency heads at both
ATF and Justice Department. I will continue to monitor the progress of these
investigations. As we learn more about individual’s roles in the “Fast and
Furious” operations, I will keep your thoughts in mind.
Thank you again for writing to share your concerns.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator
