March 4, 1678, Venice, Republic of Venice—died July 28, 1741, Vienna,
Austria) Italian composer. He was taught violin by his father. In 1703 he
was ordained a priest (and later became known as the “Red Priest” for his
red hair). He spent most of his career teaching violin and leading the
orchestra at a Venetian girls' orphanage. After 1718 he became more
involved in opera as both composer and impresario. His concertos were
highly influential in setting the genre's three-movement (fast-slow-fast)
form, with a returning theme (*ritornello*) for the larger group set off by
contrasting material for the soloists, and he popularized effects such as
pizzicato and muting. His *L'estro armonico* (1711), a collection of
concerti grossi, attracted international attention. His *La stravaganza* (
1714) was eagerly awaited, as were its successors, including *The Four
Seasons* (1725). In all he wrote more than 500 concertos. His most popular
sacred vocal work is the *Gloria* (1708). Though often accused of repeating
himself, Vivaldi was in fact highly imaginative, and his works exercised a
strong influence on Johann Sebastian
