*Under construction by contractors with top-secret clearances, the blandly
named Utah Data Center is being built for the National Security Agency. A
project of immense secrecy, it is the final piece in a complex puzzle
assembled over the past decade. Its purpose: to intercept, decipher,
analyze, and store vast swaths of the world’s communications as they zap
down from satellites and zip through the underground and undersea cables of
international, foreign, and domestic networks. The heavily fortified $2
billion center should be up and running in September 2013. Flowing through
its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all
forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails,
cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal
data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and
other digital “pocket litter.” It is, in some measure, the realization of
the “total information awareness” program created during the first term of
the Bush administration—an effort that was killed by Congress in 2003 after
it caused an outcry over its potential for invading Americans’ privacy.*

More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the
internet, from your television to your car navigation systems to your light
switches. CIA Director David Petraeus cannot *wait* to spy on you through
them.
Earlier this month, Petraeus mused about the emergence of an “Internet of
Things” — that is, wired devices — at a summit for In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture
capital

“‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly
applies to these technologies,” Petraeus enthused, “particularly to their
effect on clandestine tradecraft.”
All those new online devices are a treasure trove of data if you’re a
“person of interest” to the spy community. Once upon a time, spies had to
place a bug in your chandelier to hear your conversation. With the rise of
the “smart home <http://www.wired.com/promo/wiredhome/>,” you’d be sending
tagged, geolocated data that a spy agency can intercept in real time when
you use the lighting app on your

adjust your living room’s ambiance.
“Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely
controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification,
sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters — all
connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and
high-power computing,” Petraeus said, “the latter now going to cloud
computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and,
ultimately, heading to quantum computing.”

experienced the technological jump from old-school, hand-flown A-4s — the
