Romney Leading Republicans to Defeat, Just Like Wendell Willkie

Not since 1940 has there been so little difference between the Presidential candidates. Wendell Willkie ran his “me-too” campaign against Roosevelt in 1940, promising to keep all FDR’s economic policies. Romney has done the same for Obama on every big issue. So in spite of having the worst economic record of any President in history, Obama will be winning by an Electoral College landslide.
On the unending, undeclared wars in Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, Waziristan, etc., there is total agreement. Romney’s only complaint about Obama’s foreign quagmires is that “our Navy needs more ships”. While this may bring up questions about his knowledge of the needs of desert warfare, Mitt seems to have no constitutional objections to a President launching wars without congressional approval. Nor does he have any qualms about a country with a debt bigger than its GDP ($16 trillion, up from a mere $10.6 trillion when Obama took office) printing yet more money to fund every Third World warlord on the planet.
On the unending bailouts of the large banks, financial industry companies, GM, etc., there is no disagreement either. Goldman Sachs and the other bailed-out financials were a large donor source for both men, and it seems to have been a good investment for them. Romney vaguely claims that somehow his business experience will make his corporate welfare policy different. The problem is that corporate welfare isn’t “business”, it’s racketeering.
On government-run health care, there is no daylight between the candidates. The idea that the private sector could run high-tech health care as efficiently (and improve treatment outcomes as quickly) as it does in the high-tech computer industry is foreign to both men.
On the issue of Prohibition, Obama may be just a little more extreme in his willingness to violate the US Constitution. It is doubtful that a President Romney would have dared to send Federal agents to drag California medical marijuana cancer patients (legal under California law) off to prison.
It’s 1940 again. A Democratic President is leading the country into a continuing corporate-welfare-driven economic disaster, with major war looming on the horizon. And the Republicans, instead of running on a platform of economic recovery, are “me-tooing” themselves into a stunning national electoral defeat.
Romney’s dead weight on the top of the 2012 ticket will roll back the Republican gains of 2010 in statehouses nationwide. This will leave us with four more years of Obama’s disastrous economic policies. There will also be more Democratic governors and state legislatures to help him complete our conversion into East Germany Lite. The US economy is out of resources to pay for it all. There is no one left to bail out the United States… the Chinese certainly aren’t going to loan us another trillion.
There is one last historical opportunity for Republicans, if they choose to grasp it. After their victories on November 6th, the Democrats will now “own” the Great Recession. If Republicans choose to, they can do what they did in 1946, and run in 2014 on a platform of economic recovery. We can end the undeclared wars, give up on “too big to fail” bailouts, and go back to being a real country again.
Our nation doesn’t need two crony-socialist parties that front for the same financial interests. If we are going to survive the 21st century as a free country, then we need a Republican Party that will offer a free-market, limited-government alternative to more pointless war and corporate welfare. I will continue to work for that goal in the hopes that voters will tire of the Greater Recession by 2014.
