*An energy policy analyst sees President Obama bankrupting the coal
industry now that he's been reelected.*

Tom Borelli, Ph.D., senior fellow with
FreedomWorks<http://www.freedomworks.org/>,
comments about the issue.****

"Well, this election was certainly a turning point, not only for America
and for our freedoms and liberty, but also for the whole fossil fuel
industry," he says. "Tragically, with the reelection of President Obama, I
really do have deep concerns about really the ultimate survivability of the
coal industry."****

The coal industry and special-interest groups have long argued that new and
incoming regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would
result in the closing of coal-fired power plants, prevent the construction
of new ones, and kill jobs.****

In 2008, then-Senator Obama made headlines by
saying<http://www.youtube.com/watch?vBqHL404zhcU>that under his plan
of a cap-and-trade system, "electricity rates would
necessarily skyrocket regardless of what I say about whether coal is good
or bad." He went on to say that will cost money, and utilities will pass
that money onto consumers.****

"Cap and trade did not pass, but he's been using the EPA to wield many
regulations, including greenhouse gas emission regulations," says Borelli.
"Going forward, I really do see the president bankrupting a lot of the coal
industry."****

Some utilities have switched over to using natural gas, and many OneNewsNow
readers have commented that is a sign of the free market. Borelli
disagrees, adding it is more from regulations involving coal than anything
else.****
