A very interesting, thought provoking post. Thanks to member Mustang, I have been, and I still am currently reading the Vince Flynn series of novels revolving around fictional CIA Agent Mitch Rapp, (I am currently on Number 11 of 12: "Extreme Measures") and although fictional, I do believe that the Flynn series does give some good insight into the "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques".
Back some seven or eight years ago, there were five different memoranda released; (*e.g*.; Steven Bradbury's May 10, and May 30, 2005 Memoranda, as well as Jay Bybee's Memorandum, John Yoo's Memorandum and the "Rumsfeld Defense Department Working Group's" Memoranda, which detailed with specifics the enhanced interrogation techniques utilized. We have discussed those methods ad nauseum here in the group, and I will try not to go back and repeat what we have already discussed....I know that there is a divergence of opinion here, as to what constitutes "torture". In general, there were only 31 detainees who were put through any enhanced interrogation techniques. Of the 31 detainees, 28 detainees were only subjected to Level One and Level Two interrogation tactics, and three individuals who were subjected to Level Three interrogation tactics. None of these individuals were considered prisoners of war. They were illegal enemy combatants, who wear no uniform, who were beholding to no Nation-State other than a fanatical cultish religion, and who were intent upon destroying Western Civilization as a whole, to include the destruction of the United States of America and its citizenry. After Khalid got doused with a little bit of water, and was finally subjected to (again, medically supervised waterboarding) Khalid finally revealed the plot to crash a plane into a Los Angeles skyscraper, as well as attacks on Los Angeles International Airport. That the cell who was planning to carry this attack out, (parts of the cell were located here in the United States) were apprehended. Through the enhanced interrogation techniques, it was learned of a plot to set off a dirty bomb in Washington D.C. as well as the structure of al Queida and various cells and structure of al Queida and the Taliban. *See* Bradbury's May 10th Memorandum at 10-11. What did we learn from all of this? As Vince Flynn constantly reminds us: "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques Work!"
