If Rand Paul were to win the nomination would the neocons go back to being Democrats?

Many people don’t know that the neoconservative ideology actually emerged with Irving Kristol (father of Bill Kristol the current editor of the Weekly Standard) and a group of former Trotskyites from the City College of New York. They advocated a big military presence abroad (witness Iraq) and an activist government with a generally socially conservative flavor. In the 1970s the neocons, fed up with the radical social left in the Democratic party defected to the Republicans, then not a “party of small government” at all.

Now the Republicans might be returning to their more commonsensical, perhaps even truly small government roots, and this annoys many people who are in power in the GOP but likely won’t remain so for long. The neocons, who saw their zenith during the Bush years are on the downslope of influence in a big way.

So in this article in the Daily Caller Matt K. Lewis asks whether McCain would back Hillary Clinton over Rand Paul in the 2016 presidential race?

Lewis thinks that it matters. I don’t know that it does. Republican voters didn’t like the guy in 2008 and I don’t think many would care if McCain, the Cold Warrior angry bird, abandoned his party. I think many expect it.
