no fan of the late Elizabeth Edwards, cuckolded wife of John Kerry's and
the Democrats' vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. But even she
deserves better.
Alone among the U.S. media, it was a supermarket tabloid, *The National
Enquirer*, that doggedly pursued John Edwards' adultery and "love child"
(with Rielle Hunter) story. For that, the *Enquirer* was nominated for a
Pulitzer award.
Now, the *Enquirer*
reports<http://www.nationalenquirer.com/celebrity/special-investigation-john-edwards-grave-shame>that
19 months after her death at age 61 from breast cancer, John Edwards
still has not placed a proper headstone on Elizabeth's grave, with the
grave marked "with only a 5-by-7 card that could hardly be seen," according
to "an angry family insider."
So Elizabeth's siblings are stepping forward. They have commissioned a
proper headstone by the same sculptor, Robert Mihaly, who'd fashioned a
large marble angel for the Edwards’ son Wade, who was killed in a 1996 car
crash at age 16.
In the meantime, Elizabeth's siblings have placed a temporary footstone on
her grave at the Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, N.C., with lyrics from a
Leonard Cohen song which Elizabeth had painted on her kitchen wall shortly
before she died: “Ring the bells that still can ring/Forget your perfect
offering/There is a crack in everything/That’s how the light gets in.”
Said the family insider: “Now Edwards is treating his wife in death the
same way he treated her in life – shamefully.”
That's one (very minor) reason why I want to be cremated and my ashes
scattered to the wind, instead of buried.
When my life on Earth is *fini*, what endures is my soul that hopefully
will be rejoined with my Creator.
That is all that matters.
