I have seen both government officials and republicans questioning the interventionist policy more in the last 2-3 months than in the last 2-3 years. It was because Wilson’s blind faith and eagernessto establish democracy and peace everywhere allowed him to be successfully swayed by the members of his administration. This change in American diplomatic policy from neutrality to intervention was a momentous change in American foreign affairs. Power is only attained by the acquisition of power from other weaker empires, and so when the United States undertook a more active foreign policy, it was the catalyst for America’s rise in the world as a superpower. However, I wonder at times would have happened if a different course was taken by Wilson—what would have occurred if Wilson was victorious in having his moral principles become the guiding force of his major policy decisions? Is it ever possible for diplomacy to be governed by ethical policy and romantic ideals? In a sense, Woodrow Wilson has already answered this question for us: ideals can only become a guiding force to diplomatic policy as long they are applied in the first place.
