Part of the scam involved convincing HSBC that he had collateral in the form of 'safe' debt securities bought from the US government, known as Treasury Notes.But things fell apart after, as boss of private equity firm Nemazee Capital, he was convicted of scamming $292 million out of Citigroup, HSBC and Bank of America. But he did not have them. A Foreign Office spokesman told the Telegraph: 'Sir Peter and his wife, Susie, were not aware of what Mr Nemazee was doing. 'Of course, fraudsters, by their very nature, tend not to tell people what they are up to. 'Sir Peter was, however, acutely conscious of how this might go down in Washington. 'He raised the matter himself when he became aware that he was being considered for the posting. 'It went to the highest levels and the feeling was that he was the man for the job. 'He cannot be blamed for his brother-in-law, any more than his wife can be blamed for her brother.' Sir Peter, whose cousin Captain Herbert Westmacott MC was killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1979, will replace Sir Nigel Sheinwald in the post. He attended Taunton School, in Somerset, and then went to New College Oxford. He joined the diplomatic service in 1972 and was awarded a knighthood in 2003.
