"Yes," Nick whispered
answering her question. "I've had it ever since the day we went shopping
together. It was in my bike until I went out to get it that day you were getting
to know Kat better."
"No there is no medication talking, just plain ol Nick" he said smiling. And Julia remembered -- Nick had gone off and she was
looking at wallets, having noticed his was pretty worn out. The saleslady
helping her had mentioned something that made her grin now. She was
reaching over and giving him another kiss when the door opened and Kat came
in.
She gave Kat a tentive smile and straightened as Nick
invited her over to sit on the bed with him.
"Watch him for a minute would you?" Julia asked Kat as the
nurse got ready to leave, both to give Kat and Nick time alone so that Kat
wouldn't feel uncomfortable with Julia there as she had before and during the
trip over, and because Julia wanted to find out what Nick's real status was on
record.
It was because she remembered how Kat had felt prior to
the trip to the hospital that Julia didn't mention or show the ring and she gave
them both a quick grin before following the nurse out.
