The detrimental effects of big transfers which you refer to are mostly due to bufferbloat, that is, ineffective queue management. Using CoDel and good traffic marking and matching on at least your router helps alleviate the problem a lot. OpenWrt has a nice setup of this. -- Kenyon Ralph
